Rock Climbing in Rock Canyon

Oct 02, 11 Rock Climbing in Rock Canyon

Rock climbing is one of those sports that you can never seem to get enough. It’s hard to beat the exhilaration of defeating a big rock face and the adrenaline of being high above the ground. And the best part about it is it’s FREE (after you buy your own gear that is).

One of northern Utah’s premier rock climbing locations is found at Rock Canyon in Provo’s backyard. Get to the parking lot by driving east towards the mountains on N. Temple Dr. next to the Provo Temple. You will see the canyon straight ahead of you with plenty of parking. Once you arrive at the mouth of the canyon you can get to most of the routes within a quick 5-10 minute hike.

Rock Canyon offers an extremely wide variety of routes that will satisfy nearly any skill level. The routes are rated from 5.5 to 5.13 with the majority of which are outfitted with bolts at the top. This makes the rock climbing accessible to individuals with limited budgets.

The minimum amount of gear you will need in order to hit the crags includes:Rock Canyon

  • 60-meter climbing rope
  • 2 harnesses
  • 4 locking carabiners
  • 2 belay devices

There is no end to the equipment you can buy, but nothing can replace the necessity of having the required experience in order to have a safe climb. You want to avoid climbing when it is cold and wet, but even this late in the season Rock Canyon has a lot of west-facing walls that keep things warm.

Rock Canyon is a great place to go in Provo. Even if you don’t have much time, experience its beauty with a short hike to watch the sunset or take a glimpse to see others conquering the rock. If you’re hungry afterwards, check out some Provo restaurants for a tasty meal.
