Big Spring Hollow Trail

Jun 25, 12 Big Spring Hollow Trail

Looking for a great place to hang out with family and friends? Big Springs is a close and convenient escape from the heat and the city. This place is perfect when you have a couple of hours to burn in the evening or on a Saturday.

The Big Spring Hollow Trail is located up Provo Canyon. To get to the trail, drive up Provo Canyon 6 miles and turn right at Vivian Park. From there, drive 3.2 miles and you will see a sign on the left side of the road that reads “National Forest Access.” Turn right at the sign and follow the road a couple hundred yards to a parking lot.

The trail-head to Big Springs starts at the west end of the parking lot. The trail is 3.5 miles round trip. Feel free to bring along your mountain bike or your hiking shoes. I have both biked and hiked the trail numerous times and have found it most enjoyable each time. Plan on spending 2-3 hours to make the trip up and back. At the spring you’ll be rewarded with the pleasant sound of running water and beautiful green vegetation growing everywhere.

Upon completing your hike or bike ride, the park at the bottom of the trail-head has running water and restrooms and a large grassy area where you can rest. There are also picnic tables and a couple pavilions where you can sit and have a relaxing picnic or BBQ.

This area is a great place to spend your time on a hot summer day. The temperature is generally a good 15 degrees cooler than down in the valley. You might also enjoy hiking to Stewart Falls or Bridal Veil Falls.
